The Turnaway Project hosts a powerful night of performances & panelists to benefit Plan C  in expanding  access to medication abortion, Access RJ in advocating for reproductive justice  providing resources and expanding reproductive healthcare, and The Turnaway Project in using art and science to drive policy and social change.

A cast of award-winning actors will perform an exclusive staged reading of The Turnaway Play, inspired by the groundbreaking Turnaway Study that followed 1,000  ethnically diverse pregnant people over five years and provided the first scientific  evidence on the life-altering consequences of being denied a wanted abortion.

Followed by a riveting panel discussion with Dr. Diana Greene Foster, a 2023  MacArthur Fellow and researcher at UCSF who conducted the Turnaway Study,  Francine Coeytaux, Co-Founder of Plan C, and Xochitl Lopez-Ayala, Policy Coordinator  for Access RJ.

This event will also celebrate the official kickoff for the Plan C Community Road Trip — a nationwide initiative connecting communities and organizers to fight for abortion  access.

The Play:

The Turnaway Play is a witty, moving, and timely look at what really happens when women are denied access to abortion. The play is inspired and informed by the groundbreaking Turnaway Study, which followed 1,000 women over ten years and reached the first definitive scientific conclusions about the consequences for women’s lives of either having or being denied abortions. The study was headed by the playwright’s real-life sister, Diana Greene Foster, and the characters are based on study subjects and members of the research team. With honesty and humor, the play reaches beyond our polarizing political conversation to look deeply into one of the most important and urgent issues of our time.
